There is a great amount of money to be made in film composing.
If you are like most musicians, you would absolutely love to hear your music played on a feature film or a television show.
However, there is just one problem. Writing a complete piece or “cue” with orchestral instruments, production, and editing seems impossible.
First you have to look at your picture and decide on a concept for your music. Then you have to choose a style, create sounds, or find a sample stack that portrays the sound you are looking for. Then you have to write a piece on piano, add melody, and orchestral instruments. After that, you have to put plugin after plugin on your samples to tweak sounds to find exactly what you are looking for.
And after ALL OF THAT, you still have to edit and arrange. This is just the beginning.
Being able to accomplish all of these things are just some of the struggles that I had when I first decided to start film composing.
So, I did what anyone would do who wanted to pursue a real career in this field… get a degree. So I attended UCLA’s film scoring program.
Unfortunately, while I was able to learn a lot about film scoring, I was never able to find the do-this, do-that, step-by-step guide I wanted. Even though I was going through a university program, it was hard to find actual video to score. Without this, it’s impossible to get your feet wet in the industry. Also, technology is moving so fast that most universities are not teaching the most up-to-date information. This leaves you with a lot to learn, even after you graduate. Then when you do make music, it leaves you wondering if it could really compete (IF you even knew how to sell it in the first place). This is a huge area where universities are lacking when it comes to helping you start a career.
All of this was very annoying, because even though I learned a lot, I had to fill in so many gaps by researching myself and recovering from my mistakes.
I also didn’t want to sift through tons of useless information when it comes to new technology.
Of course, that’s exactly what happened …
I’d spend hours trying to get the answers to my deepest questions.
Before I knew it, I’d have researched for so long that half my day would be gone.
Worse still, I’d be more confused than I was before I started!
It seemed like the people who shared anything on this topic outside of UCLA couldn’t agree on anything.
It was SUPER frustrating, even for someone who has a background in playing piano and was going through an expensive university program.
After coming across conflicting advice more times than I could count, I started paying more attention to who was actually offering the advice.
What I discovered left me dumbfounded.
… making them unqualified to give anyone entrepreneurial or business advice in this field.
This is why you can’t trust a lot of what you read online about film composition.
I wish the problems I experienced when I first started out were unusual, but they’re not.
Virtually everyone who wants to score films goes through something similar.
Along the way, most of them decide the process is too:
That’s why plenty of smart people give up on their dreams of making money with their music and starting a business with film composition.
It’s not that they CAN’T do it … they can.
It’s just a huge pain to figure out all the details when you’ve got little free time and bills to pay.
I totally understand that, because I went through it all myself.
And while I *did* manage to make sense of it eventually, it took:
• More months than I care to think about,
• Countless 16-hour work days,
• Plenty of pricey mistakes, and
• A lot of banging my head against the wall before I reached that place.
The good news is that you don’t need to go through that, because I’m about to share with you the absolute easiest way for you to start film composing.
That’s why I urge you to read this all the way through to the end. The information I’m about to share has the potential to be a huge game changer for you.
But before I get to that, allow me to introduce myself.
Hi, I’m Michael Whittaker.
That story I just told you took place when I first began film scoring, way back about 20 years ago.
After attending UCLA’s film scoring program, I spent six years as a full time composer and arranger for FOX television. Having scored over 300 television episodes and movies including the popular Power Rangers, The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The New Addams Family, and Leprechaun 6. I have been independently film scoring and producing for companies like Disney, Sony, NBC and Lions Gate Films. In 2011, my theme was chosen as the main theme of the new Disney Family Movies channel. My orchestration and keyboard skill have won many awards such as the Telly award for my score to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, Bank of America Musical Achievement award, International Association of Jazz Educators player excellence award, and the Clarence Brown Memorial scholarship for jazz.
As a result of my success, I’ve been able to do things in my life that I never dreamed were possible, like:
Build a dream studio, win awards, listen to my cues on feature films & TV, work with some of the biggest companies in the entertainment industry – like Disney – Sony – NBC – Lions Gate Films and Make residual income that turned this into a full time business for me.
While I’m thrilled with what I’ve managed to accomplish, I’ll admit that pitching my music and getting it picked up to be placed and aired was a real struggle at first.
In the beginning, I didn’t know what I was doing and I didn’t have anybody I could ask.
I didn’t have anyone to steer me in the right direction on the first steps to take.
Yet even after all that research, I still made a lot of expensive mistakes along the way… costing me lots of time and money, while causing me plenty of headaches.
The good news is that I learned from those mistakes and today, I have film composition down to a science.
I know exactly how to create music that works for film and how to pitch it to the right people, so that it actually gets listened to AND picked for the big screen. Two things that are very important for any film composer.
Still, I haven’t forgotten how hard it was when I first started out.
Back then, I really wished there was some kind of instruction manual—something I could turn to that would show me step-by-step exactly how to start film composing and actually make money doing it.
It’s designed for people like you … musicians, producers, composers. No matter where you are in your musical journey, even if you are just starting out. It’s for people who want to learn how to get started in this profession, but don’t know how or think that it sounds too hard.
The Complete Film Composer is your easy, step-by-step guide for creating film scores that you can sell and profit from for life.
And, because I give you step by step instruction and what I call “learning by doing”, it even works if you are just starting out. It does not matter your skill level. All you need is a computer, a laptop, and a DAW. We can even get some amazing sounds through an introductory sample library that you can purchase for as little as $29.
This works if you don’t know how to read music, or play every instrument under the sun. You can do this!
In fact, by the time you get to the end of it, You will have so many ideas flowing out of you, that your biggest problem will be pitching your multiple tracks that you have made from the comfort of your home studio using a computer and a DAW!!
In the The Complete Film Composer, I show you the easiest ways to create:
My program leaves nothing to chance—if you want to start film composing, I teach you how to make it in this industry.
But that’s not all.
In The Complete Film Composer, you’ll also get my secret strategies for saving massive amounts of time and money along the way.
Because if you’re like most people, you don’t have enough of either.
That’s why my course is designed to help you succeed, even if you have very little:
• or Experience
For instance …
Yep, you read that correctly.
You can learn the importance of film composition and create your first sounds for film composing in less than a week… IF you follow my instructions and use the time-saving tactics I teach in my course.
Plus, I even show you an easy method for finding affordable ways to have an incredible arsenal of sounds right from the start.
Film scoring isn’t just a great way to work from home, it is a skill that develops over time and pays you dividends on the time that you put in. I still to this day get paid royalties for music that I scored in the 90’s. This is a real possibility for you, if you follow the blueprint that I give to you in my course.
But The Complete Film Composer doesn’t just teach how to score film.
With my course, you’ll also learn super-easy methods for coming up with new musical ideas and writing music for TV, reality shows, documentaries, and games too. The assignments that I give you prepare you for anything in this industry.
In The Complete Film Composer, I’ll also show you template building, so you do not always have to start from scratch.
What’s even better is that in module 2 you will learn all about orchestration. Even if composing music for an entire orchestra has been a mystery, this will clear it all up for you and will give you the keys to success when it comes to scoring for film. I’m not an expert at playing every single instrument by any means, yet I’ve managed to write successful scores using all of these orchestral instruments and I will show you how to do the same. At the end of this course you will feel confident that you can compose to picture because we give you a hands-on approach and teach you by doing. To top it all off, we show you how to take the pieces you wrote and start making money with them.
For instance, here is a testimonial from one of my students.
“Michael Whittaker’s Film Scoring Courses/Classes are absolutely incredible. To have an Instructor that is such an amazingly talented Composer and Musician that is also a tremendous communicator of information is invaluable. I wish that I had something like this 30 years ago…”
Think of it like this.
If you tried to tackle a paint-by-number kit without knowing which color went with each number, it would be pretty hard. Next to impossible even.
But if you had the key—showing you which color went where—imagine how easy it would seem. Anybody could paint a nice picture with the key, regardless of their skill level.
The same thing is true about Film composition.
Try to do it on your own, and it’s confusing and overwhelming… like tackling a paint-by-number without the key.
But have someone give you the key and what a difference it makes.
Suddenly, it all seems super-easy.
That’s because it IS… when you have someone to show you the ropes.
Now, at this point, some of you might be thinking…
“The course sounds great, but am I really capable of doing this?”
“Don’t I need to be more talented to compose music for film?”
Allow me to answer that.
The people that are making money scoring films are out there putting in the work. With the combined experience of 16 instructors teaching you how to do this, you will have a shortcut to success composing music for film. You will learn step-by-step what you need to do to be successful in this industry. This course was designed with someone like you in mind. Someone who has never done this before and needs the blueprint that can break it all down for them.
There’s nothing I teach in The Complete Film Composer that you can’t do.
Right now, you’re reading this because there’s something you want more of.
Either you want more money, or you wish you had more time, or you’d like to feel a greater sense of pride about your accomplishments.
You can have ALL those things with The Complete Film Composer.
Imagine that for a moment.
What would change for you if right now, you committed to creating a better future for yourself, by following the exact steps I outlined in the course?
Could you start hearing your music on tv and make money doing it?
Yeah, actually—you could.
In fact, you’d be surprised if you knew how attainable that goal actually is.
Like I told you earlier, I will be giving you step by step instruction through every part of the process.
This is why starting a successful business in film composition is not unreasonable—at all.
If you are already a musician then you know the different career paths that are available to you. You could make music and sell beats, rely on streams, or maybe take your music around by gigging/touring (but this can be a serious strain on your body lugging equipment around every day).
With film composition you can write music from the comfort of your home and reap the rewards without ever having to break your back moving gear to and from shows week in and week out.
But the potential to earn more money as a composer is just part of the equation.
A lot of people work really hard on music that will never be heard or never do anything for them.
Frankly, it kinda sucks.
If you can relate to that scenario, I’ve got news for you.
Composing for film is the best cure I know of.
Think about that for a minute.
You could …
• Make a lot more money from the music that you compose.
• Build up your arsenal of equipment for a better studio.
• Wake up feeling excited about the day ahead.
• Watch your work come to life before your eyes on the big screen.
• Feel super proud of what you’d managed to achieve.
That scenario isn’t a pipe dream.
I’ve experienced all these things as a film composer.
You can too, by putting the information I teach in the course to work for you.
It consists of 130+ online video lessons that are divided into 9 modules:
That’s just a sneak peek of some of what you’ll learn in my program The Complete Film Composer—the course covers way too much to list here.
Plus in addition to all of the lessons in the course I will be giving you a BONUS PDF for orchestral sounds, as well as an epic Hit Sound Design trailer sample Pack.
As you can see, The Complete Film Composer comes with everything you need to be successful.
There is literally nothing else on the market that’ll take you by the hand and show you exactly what you need to do to compose and sell film scores.
But don’t just take my word for it.
